A Building with History

The Apple Shed occupies one of Māpua Wharf's original fruit storage sheds, a reminder of the region's rich horticultural heritage.

In the early 1900s, the surrounding Tasman district became one of New Zealand's most significant apple-growing regions. Before roads connected the district as they do today, Māpua Wharf was a vital export hub, with thousands of cases of apples passing through the wharf each season before being shipped around New Zealand and overseas. The original fruit sheds played an important role in storing and handling this produce, helping shape both the local economy and the identity of Māpua itself.

Today, while the purpose of the building has changed, its connection to the region remains. Thoughtfully restored into the restaurant you see today, The Apple Shed continues to celebrate local produce and bring people together in one of Māpua's most iconic waterfront buildings.

Meet the Owner

At the heart of The Apple Shed’s welcoming charm and relaxed coastal atmosphere is local owner, Keiran Inglis. Together with his wife Gemma, Keiran has proudly owned The Apple Shed since 2018, calling Māpua home with their two young children.

Keiran’s love of food began in Scotland, where he grew up just outside Edinburgh working in his family’s pub and restaurant. His culinary journey took him to London at just 21, where he trained under Jamie Oliver at the acclaimed restaurant Fifteen. Working under Jamie, Keiran gained an appreciation for top quality produce and the simplicity of Italian cuisine. He went on to refine his skills at the two Michelin-starred The Square, before working alongside Gordon Ramsay and Jason Atherton at Maze, followed by seven years in the superyacht industry, including time aboard The Maltese Falcon, one of the world’s largest sailing yachts.

Now settled in Tasman, Keiran brings his international experience and lifelong passion for hospitality to The Apple Shed ~ creating a welcoming dining destination that celebrates local produce, great company, and the beauty of our coastal home. Keiran is committed to sourcing quality ingredients and working with local growers, producers and suppliers.

We look forward to welcoming you to the table.
